About this tool
Redact a PDF by drawing boxes over sensitive text or images. Redacted pages are rebuilt so the covered content is permanently removed from the file – unlike simple black boxes. Free and private.
Because everything is processed locally with your browser’s own power, there is no upload wait, no file size queue and no risk of a server keeping a copy of your document.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text under the black box really gone?
Yes. Every page that contains a redaction is re-rendered as an image with the boxes burned in and replaces the original page, so the underlying text and images are not in the new file at all.
Is Redact PDF free?
Yes – Redact PDF is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Free visitors get 5 runs across all tools every 2 hours; Pro (coming soon) removes the limit and the ads.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Redact PDF runs entirely in your browser, so your PDF never leaves your device and nobody else can see it. The only exception is the optional “Copy link” button: if you click it and confirm, that one file is uploaded and kept for 2 hours so you can send a download link, then deleted automatically.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile or desktop browser. Very large files need enough free memory on your device.
